PROPHETIC WORDS
FROUDE AND IMPERIALISM
(Eeceived 4th October, 11 a.m.)
LONDON, 3rd October,
A correspondent writes to the "Morning Post" to point out a passage in Paul's lif6 of Froude: "The moral Froude drew from his travels in Australasia and the . West Indies was the need for strengthening the Imperial ties. Whilst ho dreaded the intervention of party leaders, and desired the colonies to take the initiative themselves, he thought that a common tariff was the direction in which true Imperialism should- move.'' The correspondent adds that Froude died in 1894, yet the words contain a very current meaning.
James Anthony Froude, the famous English historian, was born in ISIS, and died in October, 1894. His prejudices and lively, style have 'made him a picturesque figure and much read, but he was inexact, and often wrote with a purpose. His "Oceaha," the work probably referred to in the above message, contained a multitude of blunders. It was a record of a tour in Australia and Now Zealand, and brought many attacks upon him, notably by Freeman. Herbert Paul's "Life" of Froude appeared in 1905..
