RESCUE'EFFORT FAILS

Mr. Martin, His Majesty's Consul at Foochow, lias telegraphed from the interior stating that he has received a report from Kionyang to tlio effect that Miss Edith Nettlcton and Miss Jane Harrison, two English missionaries, who had been in the hands of Chinese bandits since June, have been shot. The ladies wcro seized in tho Fulkin province by bandits, who demanded large ransom.
Mr. Martin obtained troops from the local authority to proceed into the interior, but failed to effect contact with the captives or captors. When this proved unsuccessful, he again, at personal risk, made a. journey into the interior and is now reported to be on his way back to Foochow.
