HUTT COUNTY
HEAVY-TRAFFIC FEES
. Mr.-D. K. Hoggard presided at yesterday's meeting of the Hutt County Council. There were also present: Councillors W. V. Dyer, F. Bradey, A. Mackay, R. L. Button, and J. M. Whiteman. Mr. W. Nash, M.P., wrote that he had made arrangements for the Acting-Prime Minister and the Minister of Public Works to meet a deputation on Thursday next to discuss the projected railway on the eastern side of the,Hutt Valley. "This matter affects the lay-out largely of Epuni," said Mr. Hoggard. "Until it is definitely known where the railway on the eastern side o£ the Valley is to proceed we really cannot. do' anything of a town-planning nature." The council should press for an early decision. Councillor Whiteman suggested that if when the eastern railway were established the present line were abandoned it would obviate two ramps if the Main road were diverted through the old workshops site at Petone. Councillors Dyer, Whiteman, and the chairman were appointed delegates to meet the Ministers.
the minutes of the conference of local bodies relating to heavy traffic fees -were read in committee, it being mentioned by Sir. Hoggard in open board afterwards that the seven other local authorities in the council's area wanted the existing basis to obtain in the future, but the Hutt County was dissatisfied, and it was now necessary to take the matter to a Magistrate for his decision. This course was agreed to by the meeting. The report of Mr. H. Dyer (overseer) was adopted, and showed that a considerable number of men were still employed by the Public Works .Department in the j Epuni riding in ■ the further widening of the Western Hutt road from boundary at Helling to Haywards, and the work would probably be, completed this month. In the Taupq riding, at Pukerua road, the widening job with relief workers was in progress. Pair progress only was being maintained, the. standard of workers in this' district being somewhat below the usual quality in other parts of the county. The spoil was being used where necessary to widen narrow portions of the road, and any. spare material was being carted to form a footpath over the big drain leading to the beach. During last month fifteen bmlding permits were issued to the value of £5045.
