TRENTHAM NOTES

TOURIST TO KACE SEXT AS

HDRDLER

Training operations fit Trentham this morning were carried out nnder much more favourable conditions than have been the rule lately; and horses with engagements to meet ■at Hawkes Bay and Otaki were : able to, be galloped fast. The outside1 o£ the trial grass and the two-year-old track were both available, and the 'going was soft but satisfactory. ■ ■":.-'■-

It was the first fast work for most for at least a week, and time was not the objective. However, a specially good performance over three furlongs waa registered by:L. Daly's two-year-olds, Sailing and Capo Gold, who reeled off the distance in just over 37sec. This pair have benefited considerably as the result of their : trip to Marton and Wanganui, and should' make a bold showing in the Nursery Handicap at Hastings next week: -." Hynanna and Lady 3?any the only other Trentham horses who are to race at Hastings, were worked : together. Both moved attractively, .-particularly the latter, who gives promise of turning out a particularly useful: filly this season. She was a little fidgety going on to the track, but -her. v.rider (J. Mulvihill) soon had heT at her ease.-

A decision has been made to jump Tourist, and ho. has had-his first lessons over the schooling hurdles/this week. His first trial was highly, encouraging, but this morning he . did not fence quite so well and dropped his rider (A. Tinsley) at the fourth hurdle. He was pulling hard at'tEet-irae; and did not seem to see ,the 'obstacle. soon enough to clear it. Tourist is a strong horse and has ■' plenty of' pace, and it is likely that he will be carrying Mr. B. Eiddiford 's. colours "pycr: the fences with considerable, .success., before the season is over.'.. ".■.'■......-, ■

Kilmezzo (A. v Jenkins),' .was also schooled this morning, being'sent ovei' sis flights. He. lost no time With his fencing, and although'he..struck one obstacle hard through. getting ■in too close, his effort on the' whole was. pleasing. Ho will probably make his debut over.the fences, at O.taki, whero Tourist may also have 'h.is- first hurdle race. ■.:■'.,. . - - ; ■ , , A two-year-old .who is snowing a lot of promise in her. galloping; is Lady Noel, a bay filly by Lackhani from Lady Koteropo. and full-sister to' Lady Lackham. She is in H..L. Kingan's stable, and this moining. . caught the eyo as. being one likely to turn "out somethiiig better than ordinary hack.,. She is big for her years, and could well bo mistaken as being a year older than she actually is. She has' replaced Lady Gay in tho stable, having been received in exchange for that.useful mare, who has been mated ■ with~<Lackham. J T. Young has Tobaccoland looking very well just now^and it will not require- much work to. top him. off for racing. So far he has been disappointing, but-he promises to do better when next produced.. "■- :. i" . , !■ Two tw.o-yoarrolds,-,: Araios- (a bay celding by Arausio from .the King. (Mark mare Jerda) and Cottcsmore (a brown gelding by Hunting Song from the Limond mare. Cru.been),. are also engaging' Young's attention at present, and both moved: attractively in a short sprint together this: niorning. .-. Tho latter may race shortly,.but : more ■ time will-be taken with the .former, who may go out for a couple -of months_ before being asked for. serious trials. They are owned by Mr. 11,, P..P. Blundell, in whose -colours;._-.■ Tobaccoland also races. .. ■ ■'•:• r-. -.-..._. , Tho ■ other two members- of.: ioung s active brigade are- Joie de Val and Master'of Arts, who-are. regular visitors to the track. ■-.. ... .-.:. .
