THE ZOO

(To the Editor.)"

Sir, —Having recently visited. Newtowtt Zoo in company with other members of the local S.P.C.A., I may be able to throw some light upon the suggestion made, regarding the peccaries. In any Zoo where ample space is available,- these animals might be assured of a reasonably comfortable existence, without making their proximity overwhelmingly evident to the olfactory nerves of visitors. "The small, damp, sunless yard at, Newtown Park makes conditions miserable both for the peccaries and for their would-be admirers, the latter being unable^ if .possessed of a sense of smell, to.-visit, the locality with any degree of. comfort. Pity for the unfortunate captives' engendered the suggestion put forward.—l am, etc., LIBEKTAS.
