MYSTERIOUS MESSAGE

ALARM OF BURGLARS

Events so unusual that they might have originated in the pages of a mystery story, took place in the city on Thursday evening. Two men who were being taken to the Taranaki Police Station for investigation as to. their bona fides ran away from the constable who was escorting them and escaped. The circumstances leading to the dotention of these two men originated through a mysterious telephone message received by Mr. A. Sutherland, son of Mr. B. Sutherland, proprietor of the Self-Help Co-op. Grocery Store in Courtenay place.

Shortly after S.iO p.m., some unknown person rang up the home of Mr. Sutherland at Karori and stated that there was a burglar in the Courtenay place shop. Mr. Sutherland, jun., answered the telephone, and was told to go down to the shop straight away. He immediately communicated with the police, and went to the city. With tho manager of the shop and a police constable he made an inspection of the premises. Everything in the shop, however, was in order, and no trace could be found of intx-uders.

"While they were inspecting the back portion of the shop they saw three men coming up the alleyway, but as soon as' the men saw tho constable they rai. away. Tho constable succeeded i& catching two of the men. They were being escorted to . the police station for the purpose of investigating their bona fides when they again ran off. The mon were not under arrest, but were only being detained on suspicion.
