NO NEW RESTRICTIONS

ENTRY INTO AMERICA

KEGULATIONS ENFORCED

(Received 18th September, 2.30 p.m.) NEW YORK, 17th September.

Inquiries at Ottawa elicited the- information that no new restrictions 'on white immigration .'ire imposed. Tho only restrictions applying are in respect of the amount of money in the possession of the'1 immigrant'and v-con-tract labour, dv« to tho current depression and extensive unemployment. With the coming of autumn and winter the" immigration authorities are more closely applying .these qualifications than .at ■ other times. The. contract labour- regulation is of years' standing, and prohibits the entry into Canada of immigrants under labour contracts, except in cases where tho Minister of Immigration decides that their presence is required. The Immigration Department at Ottawa, moreover, has denied reports from Vancouver that some two hundred Australians are seeking entry into Canada there, a"nd are being held up, and some of them in danger of being sent back. Officials state that only one .or. two Australians are . detained.

Restrictions on immigration into the United States of a similar nature were also announced at Washington a few days ago by tho State Department, due to unemployment in the United States. Consuls abroad have been instructed to examine applicants for "visas more closely, with the purpose of .limiting the number fif entries'unfler the provision of the law; which enables oxclu : sion, when there is a danger of the applicant becoming a 'public charge.' Ordinary travellers are in no x way affected in cither Canada or the United States."
