Mrs. A. Muir will act as manager. After the close match experienced by the Wellington A team against Canterbury's first nine at Hastings, it may be expected that the Canterbury B team will prove a strong side, and the local players will need to', give of their best to bring home the Muir Cup. Qneen Carnival, ".The voting for the queen candidates closed on-Saturday last, and there is a great deal ■of speculation as to whom is in the lead. The result is to be announced af the Games Evening on 29th September, when Mrs. J. G. Coates, pitroness of. the New Zealand Basketball Association, and the Mayoress, Mrs. Tronpi vice-patron of the Wellington Association, will present the gifts, and also the trophies won. during the year. Pageant. ■ . ]Tk» public of Wellington- is to be «iyen an opportunity next month of seeing basketball players turning out ea'masse. ' This is to be accomplished in connection with the annual V.M.C.A. gymnastic pageant to be held at the Kilbirnie Stadium. It has been arranged that this year the Wellington Basketball Association should collaborate, with the V.M.C.A. authorities and takean, active part in the pageant, pjrt of the proceeds of the sale of ti'ckcts to go tf> the Basketball Associations 's: grounds' fund. The _ latter bddy has-been most energetic this year ia its endeavour to raise sufficient money for the purpose of laying out central basketball grounds upon which all Saturday's games can be played, and;it is hoped that the result of the pageant will further augment the funds for 'this worthy cause. Some 1200 basketball' girls are expected to take part-in the pageant, a fact which should prove an added attraction to this already popular annual event. It should also bring to the notice of Weilijigton people generally the exceeding-ly-large number of players taking part frf-the Wellington Association's weekly competitions. The girls' display will consist of , spectacular matches, team competitions, and a unique balloon niazc. They are already practising hard to1 make their portion of the programme a,v success, and their keenness alone should place such an objective beyond doubt. At present a competition is being keenly contested as to which' basketball girl can sell the greatest number of tickets for the pageant — tlie proceeds for the Basketball Association depending on the sale of tickets >jjr basketball players. A handsome prize is being awarded the winner/ this
proving an .added incentive for tho girls to develop "their salesmanship capacity. A further prize is to bo given the team selling tho largest number. Annual Dance. The annual dance of the Wellngton Basketball Association is being held to-night at the Molcoia Hall, and is expected t« be a big success. Mrs. J. G. Coates (patroness of the N.Z.8.A.) will be the guest of honour. Tho arrangements are in the hands of the following very capable committee: Mrs. A. Muir, Misses P. Madson, A. Hennessey, B. Lithgow, J. Gilehrist, Messrs. Elvines and Bryant, Hornblow. Miss Inez Connop and partner will give an exhibition dance. Grounds Fund. .. . . The Queen Carnival to raise funds for basketball grounds, has been very successful, and the amount aimed at has been raised. Many of the teams and clubs have not supported tho carnival at all, and all tho more thanks are due to those teams and clubs who have worked to make the carnival a success. With 128 teams in the Saturday competitions, it can bo realised that it is imperative that basketball grounds should be obtained, and when it is considered that many other sporting bodies with a very much smaller number of players are well catered for, it is.not too much to expect support from.Wellington citizens to enable the basketball girls to obtain grounds for this healthy sport. Basketball players come from all parts of the city,. and comprise girls of all ages, the majority being between the ages of 14 to 20. Wellington is the largest association in New Zealand, Auckland being next with 88 teams. Other centres have managed: to obtain grounds, so surely Wellington with its large number of teams should be able to have its own courts. __„___—».
