With a short interval prior to local candidates being required to race under silk again, matters were somewhat quiet sA Awapuni yesterday morning. The tracks •were in splendid order, and the coarse proper was open to the youngsters, ■while the trial grass and plough -were also in 1330. Awapuni will have two candidates competing in the Avondale Stakes on Saturday, Teller (Paper Money—Tango), representing Mrs. M'Donald's stable, and King tfelrassuK (Colossus —Queen Elizabeth), carrying ,G. W. New's colours. The former was one of the pre-breakfast workers, but the colt was not asked to gallop, being restricted to pace work on the grass. He ■will be ridden in his engagement by H. N. Wiggins. While he finished well back in the Debutante Stakes at Wanganui on Saturday, the Paper Money two-year-old has command of a good turn of speed.
King Colossus, on the other hand, was given a working try-out on the course proper the- reverse way with B. H. Morriß in the saddle, the Marton horseman, who will pilot him in his classic engagement on Saturday, having come through to Awapuni for the occasion.
