FISHING INDUSTRY

POSSIBILITIES OF EXPORT

The possibility of New Zealand building up a big export trade in fish was raised by Mr. A. E. Ansell (Reform, Chalmers) in the House of Eepresentatives last night during the discussion on the estimates of the Marine-Depart-ment.

Mr. Aiisell said that, if the fishing industry was developed to the extent it could be, it would provide a large amount of productive /work for the unemployed. A. Scotsman had >ecently told them that the Dominion rrsm losing a great deal because it was failing to develop an export trade. The fish in the southern waters of the Dominion were not surpassed in any other part of the world. It was true that they had lost to South Africa, a "great deal of the Australian trade, but that was owing to the lack of shipping facilities, and because New Zealand had not shown sufficient enterprise in developing the industry. He suggested that a board should bo sot up to control the industry and that investigations should be made into the possibilities of overseas markets.

No reply was made by the Minister.
