CLUB CHAMPIONSHIP

CANTERBURY V. WELLINGTON

Play in the annual 20-board match between the above clubs was concluded on Monday evening, when a prompt start was effected. Play was slow at some_ of the boards, but on the whole very tair progress was made, eleven gajnes being finished, as follows:— Board 2: G. P. Anderson (Wellington) won a bishop and 3 pawns by forceful play, his opponent resigning a hopeless game at move 32, • Board 5: W. Mackay, fie local president, won first a pawn and then a bishop, Mr. Khouri resigning at 0 jp.m. This was the first game finished, j Board 9: H. J. Quarrel (C.) v. J. C M'Crear (W.). This /carefully-played game was.even all the W£|y. A draw was agreed to at move 33. Board 10: D. Purchaa (W.) v. R. LovellSmith (C:). The former, who is in fine form, added .a bishop to his previous gains, and scored at move 34. Board II: T. Hawkins (C.) v. G. Wigham (W.). The latter could have won the exchange, but preferred to play for position. , With, a . few . strong moves he obtained1 an attack that carried all before it. Mr. Hawkins resigned at move 28, when. mate could .only be delayed by giving up his queen. ' , Board 12: W. J, Fairburn (W0 v. W. F. Harding (C). Shortly" after resuming Mr. Fairburn.woh a "third pawn, arid then v knight. H's opponent resigned a hopeless bout at move 32. Messrs. Purchas, Wigham, arid' Fairburn have been complimented on. scoring the "possible" in this year's telegraphic fixtures. Board 14: W-'H: Hughes (W.) v. S. Khouri (C). This stubbornly contested bout' was even' throughout^ and a draw was agreed to at the 23rd move. Board 17: B. Shillitp (C.) v. W. R. E. Jones (W.). A draw between this wellmatched pair was agreed to at move 31, there being no win in sight for either Board 18: F. Grady (W.) v. G. G. Parkins (C). The former accepted a draw at move 30, with pawns equal and bishops of opposite colour. Board 19: E. B. Raymond (C.) v. J. L. Hardy (W.). Play was livelier at tins board, 40 moves being recorded. A draw was agreed to after Mr. Hardy had equalised by regaining a lost pawn. Board 20: Miss Phillis (W.) v. T. L. Drummoud (C). This was a game of alternating fortunes. Miss Phillis equalised when regaining the exchange, a draw being agreed to at move 33, when neither player had the slightest advantage. Miss Phillis was complimented on drawing her first telegraphic game, to do which she had repeatedly to find the right move in a complicated position. Each side takes half a point for a drawn game, and the present tally is, therefore: Wellington C.C. 8, Canterbury C.C. 3, with nine unfinished games, concerning which negotiations are to be opened up shortly with the Canterbury Club.. Any positions that the two captains cannot come to an agreement about are to be referred, under mottoes, to the Otago members of the N r e\v Zealand Adjudication Board. Two of the unfinished games appear to be wins for the Canterbury CO., four positions look drawish, and the remaining three favour the Wellington Club, which has excellent prospects of winning the match, and also of retaining the club championship of New Zealand for another year.
