MOUNT HOLDSWORTH CLUB
(Special to "The Evening Post")
MASTERTON, Thia Day, There was a very good attendance at the annual meeting of the Mount Holdsworth Club last evening. Mr. G. J. Goldsman (president) occupied the chair. Amongst those present were two officers of the Forestry Department, Messrs. P. A. M. Reveirs and -Wi-H. Jolliffe.
Mr. Goldsman presented the annual report, already published, which showed that a considerable amount of useful work had been done during the past year, notably in repairing the mountain house and in having the approach road improved and that important activities were planned for the year now opening.
The balance-sheet showed a small debit. It was decided to,,obtain as many new members as possible as one means of building up the funds that are needed for further improvement works. A sum of between £8 and. £9 was placed during the year in the collection box wliich has been • set up at the entrance to the reserve, -with a notice inviting motorists to contribute to the cost of road improvements. Woi'k for the coming season was discussed, and it was decided to apply to the Forestry Department for permission to cut a new track from the lower part of_ the reserve- to the mountain house, up the valley of the s{aungatarira. This track will provide a'much Inore direct route and -easier grades, than .the track .now, in, usß. Another work to be undertaken this season is the enlargement of the motor parking area by clearing more of tlje lower reserve. Itis intended also to cut back the track to Donnelly's Camp. ' It was decided to promote a tramping club in connection with the Mount Holdsworth Club, and Messrs. Goldsman, Jackson, Laird, and Wallis, were appointed a sub-committee to' formulate specific proposals to this end and call a meeting of all interested in the formation of a tram - ing club.
Mr. .Reveirs pointed out that many trees' felled for firewood near the mountain house were, cut-oft' four feet or more above the. gtfnuul instead of being cut close to the" ground. The stumps left were unsightly, and a considerable waste of wood was also entailed. It was decided that stumps which had been left in this way should be cut down;
The matter of ferns and shrubs being taken from the reserve was also mentioned. The .Forestry Department is to put up a number of notices warning: visitors that ferns and shrubs must not be removed and that proceedings will be taken against any persons doing so.
