evening by Miss Melville, when she addressed a group of Girl Guides. Miss Paterson. (Wellington South District Commissioner), and Miss Walker (Wellington North District Commissioner), accompanied by a large number ol Guidors (leaders and seconds), had assembled at their headquarters, to hear Miss Melville's lecture on "Homo Industries." After enumerating the many national advantages of New Zealand, Miss Melville stressed the necessity of utilising, these advantages . for the development of our local industries to the exclusion of importation, this being essential if .. the' unemployment problem, was. to be' solved. The women and girls, who were responsible for SO to 85 per cent, of tho buying in Now Zealand, could materially, assist this development by buying New Zea-land-mado goods. "If everyone spent Is a week on locally-made articles, there would'be a difference of £4,000,000' & year," said Miss Melville, "and this also would practically do away with unemployment."- She deplored the reluctance of women to buy New Zea-laud-niade goods and pointed out that our raw materials, wool, leather, and timber, were as good as any to be found in any other country. To illustrate her lecture she showed a series of very interesting' slides. These wore arranged to form, "picture stories," and traced the progress of tho industries from the raw material to the finished article ready for sale. Miss Walker and Miss Paterson both conveyed the thanks of the Guiders to Miss Melville and assured her that they would all benefit by the very excellent advice they had received.
