Yesterday afternoon the GovernorGeneral and Lady Bledisloe visited several of the many retail establishments m the city which this week are making; special displays of New Zealand-made goods. A number of purchases of loc-ally-manufactured products was. made by Their Excellencies. His Excellency; also paid a visit to the Norwegian, whaling iaetory ship Kosmos.
Mr. P. Sargood, head of Sargood, Son, and Ewen, Ltd., returned to "Wellington to-day by the Mataroa, after spending several months .in England* He was accompanied by Mrs. Sargood and her cousin, Lady Bobtnson. ,
Mr, A. K. Bellj managing director o% the distilling firm of A. Bell and Sons, Perth, was a passenger by the Mataroa^ which arrived from England to-day.
A resolution of sympathy with a member of the board, Mr. C. H. Nichoils, in the loss of his mother, was passed at to-day's meeting of the Wellington Education Board, member* standing as a mark of respect. -
Mr. E. Eoid, chairman of director* of Kobert' Ecid and Co., Ltd., Melbourne, arrived at "Wellington to-day by. the Mataroa from Home, en route,to Australia.

Mr. E. L. Swan, manager for Aastralia and New Zealand of the Phoenix Assurance Co., Ltd., returned by the Mataroa_ to-day after spending nine months in England on a combined business and pleasure trip.
A Press Association message from Dunedin announces the death, of Mr. William Thompson, "Measurer," of the bowling notes in the "Evening Star." Mr. Thompson had been laid .aside for * few weeks with a heart weakness, and his death was not unexpected. For"so years he had been a compositor and linotypist. ' ;..'.'-
Lieut-Colonel ■ A., Me110r,.".." :,C.SI.G., D.5.0.,. accompanied" byj Mrs... .'Mellor and their two children, reached WelLlington to-day by the Mataroa front Home to spend about two years in the Dominion. He has made arrangements to live at Havelock, Hawkes Bay, and hopes to find the trout-fishing in this country as good as it has been described abroad.
Commander H. Morgan, D.5.0.,- 8.N., arrived by the Mataroa to-day from England to take command of H.M.S. Veronica, which is now at Auckland. Commander Morgan, who was commander of H.M.S. Dunedin up to last February, will relieve Commander G. W. T. Robertson, who is returning Home by the Niagara. LieutenantCommander B. Grimes also arrived by the Mataroa to replace Lieutenant-Com-mander R; M. Spencer on the Veronica. Two other officers who came by the Mataroa were Lieutenant S. Warrend and Sub-Lieutenant B. Vasey, who' will replace Lieutenant A. J. Baker-Cress-well and Lieutenant C. P. Wade, respectively, on the Veronica.
The exceptional popularity of tha late Captain B. J". Shardlow, formerly bandmaster of the First Wellington. Regimental Band, was evident ironi tho size of. the cortege at the funeral, which took place at the Earori Cemetery yesterday. A service was eo'nducjtnd. at fhe Anglican Church by the Revs. F. M. Kempthorne and H. E. K. Fry, and the remains were taken on a draped gun-carriage to the graveside, where the last rites were conducted by the Rev. T. Fielden Taylor. A volley was fired over the grave by a firing party of twelve n.c.o.'s from the First Battalion of the AVellington Eegiment, under Regimental Sergeant-Major W. F. Fel,len. Among those who were present fat the funeral were representatives of I the staff of the Wellington Regimental District, the commanding officer and officers of the First Battalion of the Wellington Regiment, the Wellington Regimental Band, representatives of the Returned Soldiers' Association, aud of the different city bands, in addition to- Lieut. Buckley, of the Queen Alexandra's Own Band, Wanganui, and fellow employees from the Wellington "Gas Company.
