MODERATE SCORE

AUSTRALIA V. KENT

FREEMAN FORMIDABLE

TWO GREAT CATCHES

United Press Association—By Electric Telegraph—Copyright. (Eeceived 28th August, 9 a.m.) . LONDON, 27th August. The match between the Australian eleven and Kent opened at Canterbury in fine weather, on a good wicket. The start of play was delayed because the train was late.

The following are the teams: —

Kent: Chapman, Legge, Bryan, Knott, Todd, Hardinge, Woolley, Freeman, Ashdown, Ames, and Wright.

Australia: Woodfull Ponsford, Bra dm an, Fairfax, Jackson, Grimmett, a'Beekott, Biehardson, Hurwood, Wall; and Walker. ~

Australia 'won the toss, and elected to bat, but made a poor start.

Woodfull and Ponsford scored 39 in steady fashion when the captain started too slow for a short single, and was thrown out. Without addition, to the score, Freeman, who has had a remarkably successful season, claimed Ponsford,; Ashdown taking a wonder^ ful catch at square leg. Jackson arid Bradman gave a poor exhibition. Both were out before lunch.

An inspection of the wicket; revealed a slope, resulting in Freeman making tho ball come in Bharply from the leg. Richardson hit brightly. Fairfax was' out to a full toss with the total 98 for five. A full ground saw the debacle continue; Richardson drove power' fully, and hit seven fours in sixty-five minutes. An amazing catch by Chapman at third slip Bent back Grimmett, who stopped to congratulate Chapman. Hurwood batted with skill and confidenco, and severely punished Freeman, who was taken off. Hurwood batted fifty-five' minutes and hit seven fours.

Tho Australians have now been dismissed twice in succession for under 200.

The county's opening batsmen, play^ ing soundly, put on 71 before Grimmett claimed both. Woolley and Ames, both good batsmen, failed. Following are the details:— AUSTRALIA. First Inningg.
