AS A PASSENGER
STOWAWAYS CHARGED
As a result of a cable message received from Sydney, police officers on Tuesday searched' the Maunganui for two young men, Eoy William Callaghan, aged 20, and Thomas Lionel Francis Portloclc, aged 18. While the search waa in .progress Frederick Parkes, aged 19, was also discovered. When the .three appeared before Mr. E. Page, S.M., in the Magistrate's Court yesterday, charged with stowing away in the Maunganui, Sub-Inspector Ward asked for a remand until Friday in the cases of Callaghan and Portlock. In regard to Parkes, the Sub-Inspector said ■ the accused: claimed to be a New Zealander, but had been in Australia for tw6, years. Ho had £10 7s in his possession when arrested.
in reply to the Magistrate, said that he got on the boat in Sydney and travelled all the way as a thirdclass passenger without being asked for his ticket. . He was ready to pay if he had been asked. Parkes- was fined £2 and ordered to pay.the fare, £7 10s, while Callaglian and Poitlock were remanded for sentence until Friday.
