TRUST FOR NATIVE BIRDS
(To the Editor.)
Sir, —The letter in your Wednesday's issue on "The Benefits of Art Unions" will have been an eye-opener to many people. I would like to suggest that this advantageous method of raising money should be employed regularly and exclusively in future for national purposes, which will keep the money in the Dominion and use the profits for constructive purposes. An excellent example of what I have in mind is the proposal of the New Zealand Native Bird Protection Society for an art union to raise a national fund of at least £10,000 to help its advocacy on behalf of the native birds and forests, the establishment of bird sanctuaries, and the employment of additional forest rangers.
Those who know the dangers which at present beset the native forests and its bird population, realise how urgent this question is, and it is to be hoped that the Minister of Internal Affaire will give the society a prior permit to get to work immediately towards its great aim. An art union will draw public attention to the society and its work in a striking fashion, and in itself will be a fine advertisement for the birds and bush. Moreover, the public will pay up cheerfully by means of an art union, while other collection methods would leave people cold. It should be pointed out that the .fund, when collected, will be administered by a trust, specifically for the ad- . vancemont of all objects beneficial to the preservation of native birds' and forests.— I am, etc.,
SAVE THE BIRDS.
