MILLIONS YEARLY

AUSTRALIA'S SWEET TOOTH

Australia's sweet tooth devours £7,----000,000 worth of chocolates in a year, and an increased demand fo- them re-cently-is attributed to tho fact that the boyish silhouette is less fashionable among women, says the "Sun-News Pictorial."

A manufacturer states that although tho slimming craze had caused a depression in the confectionery trade it was not as serious as might have been expected, because most women would sooner give up bread and beefsteak than a box of chocolates.

Nearly 4000 people are employed in making sweets in Victoria, apart from the hundreds of girls who stand behind the counter in sweet shops.

One of Melbourne's oldest factories makes each day -20 tons of chocolates for boxes and cartons, dliich arranged in a. singlo row would stretch from Melbourne Hospital.. to St. Kilda Town Hall, a distance of five miles.

Besides the Id and creations, boiled sweets, lolly sticks, and choedlate bars that put sticky rings round the mouths of children, this firm makes two miles and a half of toffee in a day. The half-crown box of chocolates that the shy Saturday night swain smuggles in under his overcoat during interval, is only a country cousin to the lavish boxes made for largo incomes. Boxes trimmed with velvet flowers, ruched velvet.and satin, cost anything from £5.55.
