"BEARS" ACTIVE

SYDNEY STOCK EXCHANGE

Sharp declines in investment stocks were recorded on 'Change in Sydney last Thursday, losses being the heaviest in one day for many weeks.

For over a week investors have betrayed nervousness through a realisation of the critical position of ■ the country's finances. Each day share values have receded. Weakness was accentuated by the trend of developments at the conference of Premiers and Treasurers iv Melbourne.

Though quotation of forward sales is now prohibited, "bears" have become increasingly active in the vestibule' among industrial stocks, but there has also been a fair amount of genuine selling. On Thursday trading was more active than for days past, owing to increased selling pressure. In many cases sellers lowered their limits drastically to effect liquidation.

Several prominent stocks touched new low levels for recent years. They included Tooheys, Tooth, Australian Glass, and Colonial Sugar.
