EIFLE SHOOTING MATCH
A CLOSE FINISH

NELSON, 26th August.
A shooting match between the "Nelson Defence Kifle Club and ■ the combined Country Clubs resulted in a -win for Nelson by 16 points. The scoring was very close, the range aggregates being :-^Nelson.: 300 yds, 359; 500 yds, 370; 600 yds, 358. Combined team: 300 yds, 339; 500 yds, 365; 600 yds, 357. The scores were: — Nelson:—X. A fire on Sunday morning practically destroyed a house in Halifax street owned and occupied by Mr. L. W. B. Stokes. The building was insured for £300, and the contents for £150.
The senior Rugby football championship has been declared closed, Old Boys being the winners. The championship points were as follows:—Old Boys, 21; Nelson, 18; Waimea, 12; Pirates, 12; Rivals, 7; Wakatu, 0.
The death has occurred of Mr. Hugh Diekson, of Mount street. Although Mr. Diekson had been ill for some months, his end came with unexpected . suddenness. During the earlier part of the day he had seen visitors, and was bright and cheerful, discussing current topics:, .Late in the afternoon, however, he had a .seizure, and expired within a few minutes. The late Mr. Diekson, who was 43 yean of age, was keenly interested in cricket, and at the time of his 'death was secretary of the Kelson City Association, and a member of the Athletic Club. He served with the New Zaland Expeditionary Force, and while on active service suffered a severe illness. A widow and a young son have much sympathy in "their bereavement. .....■•.
