U.S. IMMIGRATION OFFICERS
ASSAILANT DIES OF WOUNDS
OTTAWA, 24th August.
A message from Winnipeg states that two United States immigration officers, Inspector Boulton and Inspector Jones, were shot and killed by a bandit on a Canadian National passenger train near Emo, Ontario, early on Sunday. The bandit is named Emery Frenette. .'
Later Frenette was surrounded in a farmhouse, shot and seriously wounded by police. Frenetto escaped from police officers ■at Fort Frances on Saturday, after his arrest on a minor charge.
After his capture Frenette confessed to the slaying. He expressed sorrow, declaring he had lost, his job and his girl and was desperate. He had robbed members of the train crew, but did not molest any of the passengers, many of whom were- not aware, of bis presence. The immigration officers were asleep in a smoker. As they rose from the seat Frenette opened fire, killing them instantly. He mado the conductor follow him through fivo cars to tho engine, where he robbed the engineer, fireman, and brakeman. He then jumped from the train as it was entering Emo.
Frenotto, on being surrounded in a farmhouse, resisted the^ police, who set the house on. fire, forcing him to emerge, and then shot him. The bandit died in hospital at Emo iator.
