THE 9.6 MAXIMUM
For■ Eome~ years- past; :tbe Canterbury fifockey Club has inserted a clause in the ieonditione attached" iq' the New Zealand Cup, limiting the hiaximum weight to be sllotted.-ftt; fist -61b- ■ On several occasions this condition has considerably ham* pered tte ; handicapper, as in awarding 9.6 to certain performers, well performed lighter weights have come in at a great advantage. As a case in point, one may quote the handicaps of certain horses in ihe' Melbbufne Cup, to be run about the same time as the big handicap of the Canterbury Jockey Club. In the Victorian Ssace Nightmarch was awarded 0.11, Limerick 9.7, Concentrate BJO, In the Shade 1.1, and Gay Crest 7.8. With ji maximum, tof 9.6 on Nightmarch in the New Zea3and Cup, it can be clearly seeh that jgood performers like Concentrate, In the 'Shade, and Gay Crest would have a big Wvaatage over the horses in the middle and lower portion of the handicap if I^MJipßd ia.gßoportioti t«> the top weight.
