TOGETHER IN DEATH
FATE OF YOUNG COUPLE
LOST IN ALPINE CREVASSE
BEENE, 24th August.
A party of eight, roped together, climbing the 11,700 ft alpine peak Pointa de Leveque, from Arolla, were near the summit when the rope broke. A young couple who specially had .asked to ba tied next to each other crashed into a deep crevasse. No rescue was possible.
They were Vincent O'Connor, aged 25, a junior classics master at Eton, and Mary Irving (19), the daughter of one of the masters of Winchester College. They fell in love while mountaineering and had only just become engaged.
The party included the girl's father and brothers.
The accident was due to the rope being cut on a ledge of ice. The lover* will be left in a 1500 ft alpine grave.
