MAGISTRATE'S COURT

This morning's sitting of the Magistrate's Court was presided over by Mr. VV. H. Woodward, S.M. Three first offenders for drunkenness, who did not appear, had their bail of 10s each estreated. Another, an elderly woman, said that she was ashamed she should be charged with such an offence. She was convicted and ordered to pay taxi hire, ss. Arrested on warrant issued at Feildmg, Lsonard James Burne, a plumber, aged 41, admitted being £84 12s in arrears on a maintenance order in respect of his three children. He was remanded on bail until Friday, pending advice from Feilding. Duncan Johnstone, a baker, aged 56, was convicted and discharged for drunkenness, and was remanded in custody until Friday on a charge of having obtained goods and money, of a total value of £14 7s from C. Smith, Ltd., by a false pretence. A plea of not guilty was entered by Mr. 11. H. Cornish on behalf of T. Hnyward, alias Thinvall King Tiayward, salesman, aged 30, who was charged with having failed to account at Auckland for £20 to Used Cars, Ltd. Ho elected trial by jury, and was remanded on bail to appear at Auckland next Monday.

Charged with breaking and entering by day the Nurses' Home n't Wellington Hospital and stealing watches, other articles, and money, of a total value of £9 10s 6d. the property of Muriel W. Moult, Richard Hope Fenn, a fireman, aged 28, and James M'Tavish, labourer, aged 27, were remanded until 3rd September.

For having procured liquor while prohibited, Ernest Albert Jossop was fined £2, in default seven days' imprisonment, by Mr. W; IT. Woodward, S.M., in tho Magistrate's Court at Petonp on Saturday. He was convicted and discharged for having been found drunk in a public place.
