FREAK OF NATURE

MYSTERY WOMAN IN MARBLE

.\n interesting discovery lins been made- at Plymouth, which is causing much speculation (says a London exchange). Supporting the entrance to the Plymouth mfrat market are marhlc pilhirs which many years ago gr.n-cd an ancient building in the town, niid which, had been transleiseil io .the aiai-

ket. Clearly defined in the marble of one of these ancient pillars is the human form.

The outline is that of a life-size figure of a woman, beautifully moulded, but gradually fading away toward the lower portion of the figure. For the most part the pillar is of a creamy whiteness streaked with rose pink, but the body of the woman is of a soft pearly rose colour as near to the colour of flesh as possible.

Nobody seems to know how the figure came to be there. It was not drawn with human hands, nor does there seem to have been -any attempt to improve on what is undoubtedly a very remarkable eccentricity of Nature.

There is a story that when the marble was hewn a woman was crushed between two huge blocks and her form was imprinted on the marble, but this story, told by one of the oldest butchers in the market, is just a little, too fantastic.

Thousands of Plymouth people pass this marble pillar every day, but it is doubtful if more than a 1 very few of them know that such a remarkable curiosity exists. With the brilliant sun striking the pillar, the figure —a most exquisite one—is easily seen.
