FROM THE STAND

THE NEW CAPTAINCY

LONDON, 14th August.

The "Manchester Guardian" publishes a letter from an Australian which suggests that a non-playing cricket captain would allay the rigours of tho terrible controversy that is rending England. He says that instances of non-playing captains are given in the Davis Cup contests and by the managers of American baseball teams, who sit at the side of the field directing strategic moves. "Tho captaincy controversy has come to stay, and every year it will be more difficult to find a playing captain who will satisfy his critics," he writes. "Tho objection to Chapman seems to bo that he is not good enough to bat. Even his opponents admit he is a good captain." I The Australian argues that a nonI playing captain could work out and direct strategy as well from tho ' pavilion as from the field.
