FINAL GAMES

SENIOR B AND JUNIOR

THE 1930 CHAMPIONS

Both'the Senior B and junior competitions- wero concluded on Saturday afternoon. In each grade the four loading teams had been drawn to play off, but in each case the result was known well before the final series. University A established a safe lead in tho Senior B grade, and it was not surprising that they had a win by default on Saturday. Their record of ten wins nnd two drawn games out of thirteen is a particularly good one. Credit must also be given to Hutt A, who were the runners up, and who won nine and drew one of their matches. Junior honours were won by Karori, who finished up three points ahead of the nearest team, Wellington A. The champions won eleven and drew one of their games, and their record of goals for and against, 45 and 13 respectively, is extremely creditable. Following are tho tables for all grades:— SENIOR A. {

Senior A Prospects. In two more playing Saturdays, provided Aveather conditions arc not unfavourable, the senior A competition will be completed, but even at this stage it is not possible to say with any degree of certainty who will bo tho 1930 champions. Karori maintained their lead by defeating University on Saturday, while the drawn games played by the other four teams added to the advantage held by the Blacks. Thus they will commence this afternoon's games against Hutt with a lead of three points, and even if defeated will not have their chances of ultimate success minimised to any great extent. It is very unlikely that Karori will lose more than one of the remaining matches, if they lose any at all: Both V.M.C.A. and Wellington, who arc in second place, are not yet out of the hunt, but their chances of beating the leaders can only be regarded as slender. Club Championship. Karori head the club championship to date, University being next, only two points behind, with Hutt and Wellington the only other clubs over the hundred mark. Following are the points gained in the various grades:— ' Karori: Senior A 3G, senior B 18, jun- j ior 34J, third 26, intermediate 7; total: 1121J- University, 8, 60, 37|, 14, no j team; 1194. Hutt, 22, 70, 10*, 4, no I team; 106*. Wellington, 2G, 26, 40*, 14, no team; 106*. Wesley,, 18, 28, 15,. 22, 2J; 85$. Huia, no team, 14, 43^, no team" 18; 75}. Petone, no team, 34, | 23*, 19, no team; 75}. V.M.C.A., 30, 2, "0, no team, 8J; 40*. Training College, senior B only, 32;. Technical Col-lege,-third 11, intermediate 20; 31. It is interesting to note that Karori won the club championship last season with University second and Hutt third.: Next Shield Match. The position regarding the next Chal- | lenge Shield match was discussed by ! the Management Committee of the N.Z.H.A. this week. The Canterbury Association forwarded several reasons for declining the challenge match against Otago on account of the number of postponements interfering with the competitions, and on account of other arrangements. It was pointed out that Otago had already had a match for the shield against Canterbury this season, and Poverty Bay had been allotted a match on 30th August. The secretary reported that lie had endeavoured to ascertain if Poverty Bay would accept 30th August, but no reply had been received. It was decided to telegraph to Poverty Bay asking for a reply in thTeo days; failing a reply within that date, tho challenge from Otago be accepted as for 30th August. Should Poverty Bay accept, tho challenge from Otago would be declined, and Otago advised to challengo early next season. .North v. South Match. A Southern exchange makes tho following comment on the drawn game played between the North and South Island teams at Nolson on Saturday.— Owing to tho difficulty of obtaining leave, neither team was at full strength, but, despite this fact, tho teams played good hockey, and more than one tyro found approval in the opinions of the selectors. After a hard and fast gamo tho final whistle blew with honours even, each side scoring one goal. There appeared to be some doubt as to whether the North Island goal should liavo been allowed, as it appeared to have touched a northern player on its way into the net, but the referee allowed the shot. Allowing for the fact that neither of tho competing teams had had a try-out together, the standard of play was good, although inclined to be individual instead of team pay- Young players were included on "both sides, and there was only a slight sprinkling of old and experienced hands.
