Mahatma Gandhi's autobiography will be published shortly by Allen and Unwin. Lord David Cecil has been awarded the Hawthornden Prize for his biography of Cowper, "The Stricken Deer." Mr. Edgar Wallace's next novel —for always there is a new one coming along —is called "The Lady of Ascot," and will be published by the Hutchinsons. The Book Society has chosen for Juno "The Water Gipsies" (Mothuen), a. story by A. P. Herbert of the life of barge-dwellers on English canals. H. M. Tomlinson's "Between the Lines" (Oxford Press) will not be another war book but a confession of literary faith. "The Daily Record" (Glasgow) offers a £100 prize for the best literary work, with a Scottish bearing, produced in 1931 by a Scots author, whether living in Scotland or elsewhere. A German book by Princess Lichnowsky, who made many friends in London, is appearing in English with Jonathan Cape. It is entitled "On the Leash." The Princess also gives a delicately skotched, series of impressions of friends and places, including London. A history of the Queen's Bays, written by Mr. Frederic Whyto and Mr. Hilliard Atteridgc, is of one of tho oldest units in the British Army, and it added lustre in the Great War to its long record. It led the right column of the Army of Occupation in the march across the Rhine. The Longmans have a full autumn list of new books, headed by Mr. X 1. Benson's reminiscences, "As we Were." Miss Mary Caroline .Troyol. yan has writen a volume about William 111. and the Defence of Holland, 1672-4." It is based on contemporary Dutch, French, and English authorities, and on a special investigation of Dutch and English archives. Mr. John Masefield has now finished a book, which has engaged him for some time, about a famous "tall ship," tho barquo Wanderer, of Liverpool. It will.include two tales in verso, setting forth the ship's triumphs and her end. The volume will also have some new short poems of the sea by Mr. Masefield, and a "Masque of Liverpool" in verse. ■
