DR. ANNIE BESANT
"Scrutator," of the "Indian Daily Mail," has the following paragraph about Dr. Besant, apropos of her interview in the "Manchester Guardian," urging the grant of immediate dominion status to India:— "Mrs. Besant has lost no ■ time in placing her views before • the British

contemporaries and colleagues. On one of the last occasions on which I spoke to her she recalled how she lectured in France \after the war of 1871, and pleaded with the people not to entertain hatred for the Germans. That is to say, fifty-nine years ago she was working in a noble- cause. There are still a great number of people who remember her public work in England, and for whom, she has always been a kind of epitome of progressive experience. lam not at all surprised, therefore, to see the 'Manchester Guardian' opening their columns to her, and, as a matter of private interest, I should like to look back and search the files of that great newspaper to see the occasion on which she first appeared in their news columns. "Dr. Besant, who is over eighty-two years of age, arrived in London early in June, and addressed a crowded meeting of many members of Parliament and others, including a number of Indian ladies, in the Committee Boom of the House of Commons, on the evening of the sth. Mr. Freeman, M.P., presided. Dr. Besant made an appeal for ;a careful consideration of the question of giving dominion status to India, though it would be far bettor to use the phrase "a self-governing dominion." She believed that the future of civilisation depended on England and India keeping together on terms of equality, and if England did not give India dominion status fairly quickly it would be difficult to keep India within the Empire.
