Charley's Aunt Club.

The executive members of the Charley's Aunt Club held a successful evening's entertainment roccntly, when the guests of honour included the officials of the Wellington Orphans' Club and the Athenian Club, with lady friends in each case. The president (Sir Jolm Luke), with Lady Luke, welcomed the guests on behalf of the Charley's Aunt Club, and then Sir John conducted the installation of Mr. Joe Carr as chairman for the evening. A capital programme of clever items ras provided by the orchestra (conducted by Mr. J. Garry), Miss Edith Rogers, Mr. A. Baton, Mr. B. A. Brokenshire, Mr. Binet Brown, Mr. Clement May, Miss "Violet Wood, Mr. Herbert Wood, Mrs. Wilfred Andrews, and the Lyric Quartet (Messrs. Goudie, E. Hill, Binet Blown, and S. Williams). The programme concluded with a very amusing sketch by Miss L. Nicholas and Mr. Norman Aitken. Supper was serve! after the programme, and dancing fol« lowed, most enjoyable items being the "spotlight," "Paul Jones," and some of the "old-time" dances. There were about 400 guests present, all of whom had a thoroughly delightful evening. Many compliments were paid to : the organisers of the party for the success attained. Obituary. The death occurred yesterday of an! old and respected resident of Petone,. Mrs. Sarah Jane Parrant, of 56, Britannia street. Mrs. Parrant, whosa maiden" name was Hollister, was boru. in Bristol, England, 85 -.years ago. la 1850 she arrived in Wellington with her widowed mother and two brothers. The elder of these brothers died only; a few years ago, but the younger died, of fever while serving us a sergeant under Yon Tempsky in the Maori War. Mrs. Parrant lived in Wellington lot forty years, and- then went to Petone, where she has resided, until .the time of her death. Her husband died in 1894, and she leaves a family of six. sons and two daughters. • • • Golden Wedding. , ,

A very happy event took place last Sunday at the home of Mr. and Mrs. J. F. Mason, 78, Nelson street, Petone, the occasion being the celebration of the fiftieth anniversary of their wedding day. Mr.' and Mrs. Mason' are old residents of the Hutt Valley,- arid were, with the late Mr. and Mrs. James Tetley, also of- Petone, the first to be married in St. James's Church, Lower Hutt, by the late Bey, Archdeacon Fancourt, on the 17th day of August, 1880. Mrs. Tetley was a sister ' 'of •■' Mi-. Mason's. The couples on that occasion, wore presented each with a handsome copy, of the Bible to mark the event. Mr. and Mrs. Mason are still in possession of their copy, of which they are exceedingly proud. • Many tokens of congratulations were received by ; the happy couple, chief among these being a very beautiful Westminster. chiming clock, presented by their three sons, Messrs. Francis, Jack, and Fred Mason* Mrs. Mason, of Foxton (wifo ofr Mr. Francis Mason) presented the wedding cake, which was a replica of one presented to her parents on a similar occasion recently.' Another very pleasing gift was the presentation, of a beautiful bouquet to Mrs. Mason on behalf of her grandchildren, by Miss Veronica Mason, daughter of Mr. Fred Mason, of Miramar. Saturday evening was spent in music and dancing, which the former bride and bridegroom and all present enjoyed to the full. On Sunday the whole party went for a motor trip around the Hutt Valley to view once more the beautiful scenes of their boy and girlhood days. A Conference Concluded. T.'ie conference of the Free ;Kinder-gart-jn Union was concluded yesterday. A discussion, on a remit brought by tKe Hastings delegates with regard to the ceE'Drship of picture posters resulted in a delegation being appointed to sco the Minister of Internal Affairs with regard to this matter and urge that some law relating to the suitability or otherwise of picture posters be embodied in the Bill dealing with cinematograph matters which is coming before the House shortly. The officers elected for the ensuling term are as follow:— President, Lady Sidey; hon. secretarytreasurer, Mrs. J. A. Hanan; vicepresidents, Miss England (Wellington), Mrs. Wilson (Auckland), Mrs. Bauchop (Hastings), Mrs; Thackej (Christehurch), Mrs. M'Keever (Invergill). Delegates visited the local Free Kindergartens, and were keenly interested to see the children at their work and play. As a pleasant conclusion, to the conference, Mrs. Gibbs gave a delightful tea-party to the visitors, who were motored out to her beautiful | home at Belniont. Invitations Issued. The Young Maori Party has issued invitations for a social and dance, to be held at the Caledonian Hall. "" •■ The Shandon Golf Club lias issued invitations for its annual ball, which will be held at the Adelphi Cabaret. Mr, A. F. Clapcott is the dance secretary. ■<■
