ACCOUNTANTS' SOCIETY

ANNUAL REPORT

The twenty-first annual report of the New Zealand Society of Accountants contains, inter alia, details of tlio £>ast year's examinations. For the examinations covering the commercial bookkeepers' and professional courses, conducted by the "University of New Zealand on behalf of the society, 1877 candidates sat for tho full examination or to secure or complete sectional passes_. The full course was completed by 7o candidates. . For the accountants' preliminary examination 1069 candidates presented themselves and of these 574 succeedfed in either completing the examination or gaining a sectional pass. For the commercial bookkeepers' examination 1341 candidates presented themselves, and of these 205 succeeded in gaining a complete pass, thereby becoming entitled to registration as commercial bookkeepers. The usual examination for certificate of proficiency in bookkeeping, accounts, business organisation and methods was held in November last, in conjunction with the professional examination conducted by tho University of New Zealand, 197 candidates presenting themselves at this examination. Of these 48 passed, the percentage of passes being 24.37. The Attorney-General, after representations from tho society, agreed to set up a committee to report to him on proposed amendments to the Companies Act. This Committee, on which the society is represented, is at present engaged in its duties. A joint committee from the New Zealand Law Society and the New Zealand Society of Accountants is at present considering amendments to-the regulations governing the audit of solicitors' trust accounts. The Attorney-General has advised that he will give effect to the recommendations <rf the joint committee.

Membership of the society is now $84.7, an increase of 23 on last year.
