(Received 22nd August, 9 a.m.)

LONDON, 21st August. Steady rain fell during the night, and the wicket is very wet.

The gates at the Oval were not opened, as it was improbable that there wfiuld be any play in the Test match before lunch.

Soaking rain was still falling at--12.30, and the prospect of play to-day became still more remote, even if the rain ceased immediately. Moreover, the Oval wicket is notoriously slow to recover. Already there is speculation as to whether the match will go over the week-end.'

After lunch the captains inspected the flooded pitch/and it was decided to abandon play for the day. The ground was absolutely soaked, and thewicket saturated. It is quite possible that there will bo no play even tomorrow.
