THE DAY IN PARLIAMENT
Yet another milestone was passed by the House of Eepresentatives yesterday. After a sitting which lasted until a few minutes after half-past 3 o'clock this morning, the House put the Finance Bill through its final stages, and sent it on its way to the Legislative CounciL Several proposals in the Bill held the House up for some time. The allocation of petrol tax was again a bone of contention, but the Prime Minister allayed much of the opposition by intimating that the reduced payments to cities and boroughs would not operate after 31st March. He also gave an undertaking that the operation of the Bill would cease on 31st August next, after a full inquiry had been made by a special committee. The Prime Minister also made an important concession in connection with the amusement tax. He agreed to cancel the tax on tickets up to the value of Is 6d, but intimated that it might be necessary to make up the consequent loss of revenue by adding to the income tax, a proposal which was not received with any great manifestation of pleasure on the part of the Eeform Party. Before the House adjourned, the Primo Minister stated that to-day the House would consider several classes of the Estimates. The taxing Bills would also be introduced. »
