The funeral of the lato Sapper George D. C'ompton took place at tho Soldiers' Cemetery at Karori on Monday, and was largely attended by friends and relatives. The service was conducted.Tjy the Eev. W. B. Milne. Amongst those present were Sir John Luke, Mr. E. P. Norman (representing the Mayor), Lieutenant H. J. Mulholland (representing the G.0.C.), Captain A. E. Gorton (8.5.A.), and Mr. B. F. Waters (War Pensions Department).
Mr. W. V. Dyer, who was elected to the Education Board to fill the place of Mr. Gr. T. London who did not "stand again becaiise of ill-health j Messrs. A. Williams, and W. H. Jackson, representing the newly-created Masterton seat; and Mr. T. Wade, who takes the place of Mr. 8,. M'Leod, were welcomed as new members of the board at its meeting this morning. Mr. T. Forsyth, chairman, also referred to the excellent work done by the past members, Messrs. London and M'Leod, and moved that the board place on record its very high appreciation of the services rendered in the cause of education by both gentlemen while members of the board. This suggestion was heartily endorsed by other members present.
Mr. Guyton Butler, assistant director Horlick's Malted Milk Co., Ltd., England, and Mr. Peter Horlick, son of Sir Ernest Horlick, chairman of directors of the firm, arrived in Wellington today. Mr. Butler is a grandson of Mr. William Guyton, who arrived in Wellington by the Coromandel in 1840, and wan the second Mayor of Wellington. Mr. George Hunter was the first Mayor, in 3842, and was succeeded in that position by Mr. William Guytoa in the following year. Messrs. Butler and Horlick leave for England by the Aorangi on the 26th instant.
