BUS LOSSES

NO LINE PAYING

SERVICES SOMPAfIED

THREE MONTHS' FIGURES

A table of figures supplied by the Mayor, Mr. G. A. Troup, to-day regarding the council's bus services gives the most convincing reason for the council's decision to reduce the services, ajid in tho. worst case to cut the service out altogothor, in an endeavour to bring tho transport books into a sonnfler position.

So heavy are the bus losses, taken in conjunction with a substantial drop in tramway revenue, that there are indications that this year, for the first time for many years, there will be a debit instead of a credit balanco on the whole transport system.

As will be seen from the comparative table below, the losses on the Bowen street-Kelburn, Kilbirnie, and Evans Bay, Happy Valley, Karaka Bay, and Brooklyn runs are actually greater than tho amount taken in fare 4 that is, the buses on these runs do. not even pay the proverbial axle grease. The other runs bring in a" trifle more than the actual cost of operation, but not even the Northland bus, the best of a bad lot, nearly pays its way. The table is as follows:—

;-■ ''£.8808 7318 3503 The debit, balance "on bus operations last year was £14,628, and for the previous year £13,109. !

The net credit on the whole transport system for 1929-30 was £1039, as against £3104 for 1928-29, and £10,----475 for 1927-28.
