THE COST OF RAISING LOANS

In response to a request by Mr. W. E. Parry (Labour, Auckland West), two illuminating tables have been prepared by the Treasury Department, and were laid on the table of the House of Representatives yesterday. Mr. Parry asked for (1) the total reduction of income tax since 1920; (2) the amount of income tax collected each year from 1920: (3) the amount paid off the national debt during . the same period; (4) the total amount borrowed per year from 1920; (5) the yearly amount paid in interest on the external debt from the year 1920; (6) the total costs to the country in commissions and other expenses in the raising of such loans, and the actual amount received by the Government out of the total raised from the year 1920; and (7) the yearly exports and imports, together with the amount paid in freightage on imports and the amount paid in freightage on exports.

c—Figures prior to 1925-26, not comparable with 1925-26 and subsequent years, owing to alteration in system of debt repayment. ' d—lncludes £5,379,105 raised in anticipation of 1929-30 requirements.

a ihose figures are not comparable as the cost of raising loans includes loss on issue price. b—Freightage on imports assessed at 10 per cent, of f.o.b. cost. No statistics available regarding freightage on exports.
