LOWER HUTT ROADING

IMPROVEMENTS FOR WAIWETIj ROAD The Lower Hutt Borough Engineer, Mr. A. G. Bush, states that he fully recognises the justice of the complaint that * footpath is urgently required along Waiwetu road, and that the street ought to be tar-sealed. Both these improvements have been recommended by him and have the approval of the council, but in. each case the Government has for. the time being delayed the work. The council hoped to put down the footpath out of the subsidy to be paid by the Government from the unemployment loan, but for the present the payment of this sum, about £1200, is held up by a technical;difficulty, and as the whole of the loan money allocated to this street (sonio £6000) has been spent, the council cannot continue with the footpath until the subsidy is paid. In regard to tar-sealing, this street was on the schedule for the £65,000 loan which it was proposed to raise, principally to seal streets in the borough. The raising of this loan was abandoned owing to th# short repayment term insisted upon bjr the Loans Board. ; ■■' The formation of Kossiter avenue lias been started, and the men are engaged upon clearing the open drain of vrillcV stumps and other obstructions in preparation for pipe-laying. When the work i« completed, Rossitev avenue will be com- '< parable with the best of the streets of a similar type in Lower Hutt.
