NORTH V. SOUTH
A DRAWN GAME ONE GOAL EACH (From Our Own Correspondent.) NELSON, 16th August, The annual hockey match between the North and South Island was played at Nelson to-day,, the. game resulting in a draw, each side scoring one goal. In the first half, North had the better of the game, but in the second spell South had a fair share territorially. Throughout, however, the northern team displayed a better knowledge of the game, their forwards showing good combination. The North's front row were very fast. For North, B. Spiers, the left-wing, and Packer and Rushbridge were the best. Maystonc, an ex-Aucklander, playing on Souths left wing, was prominent, Whitwell being the next best forward. Dash and Gibbs, the South full-backs, put in valuable saving work, as did Snook, the Canterbury goalie. Several times his judgment alone saved the South. The teams were: — NORTH ISLAND. Robinson (Dannevirke), G. Packer (Feilding), W. Rushbridge (Wellington),S. Betts (Taranaki), and B. Spiers (Waikato). SOUTH ISLAND. , (White.) Goal: 11. Snook (Canterbury). Backs: ID. Dash (Canterbury), C. Gibbs (captain, Nelson). Halves: V. Wells and B. Rogers (Canterbury), C. Jones (Buller). Forwards: M. Bay (Otago), P. Fullwood (Canterbury), H. Whitwell (Nelson), G. Burke (Canterbury); *C. Maystone (Nelson).
SOUTH ATTACK FIRST. At the start South attacked and Whitwell had a shot which went behind. The North right wing, Robinson, centred nicely to the circle, but Dash saved splendidly. From a long hit up by Bannin Spiers and Packer combined in a passing movement to the South twenty-five, where Dash again saved his side. Spiers dribbled the ball to the circle and shot, the ball going over the goal. North then set up a hot attack. From a centre by Robinson Packer had a shot which was stopped in front of the goal, and immediately Rushbridge ran in and shot, the ball going over the bar by inches. By three long hits South went to North's twenty-five, where Maystone centred to.Whitwell in front of the posts, but the latter's shot went wide. The North' forwards combined in a rush to Souths circle. In a melee in front of the goal Packer had a shot, the ball hitting Rushbridge'a pads and going into the net. Twenty-five minutes had gone. North 1, South 0. In a period of fast play Dash and Gibbs were prominent in saving for South. Maystono made a fast run up the line and centred accurately to the South goal mouth, but his forwards were not up and P. Spiers cleared with a mighty hit. Joblin hit up to Robinson, who centred to Packer, whose shot went high over the bar. Whitwell's stick work was very clever. Half-time went without further score. THE SECOND SPELL. Soon after the commencement of the second spell Robinson centred nicely { but Dash hit the ball to half-way. Robinson returned with the ball, his shot at goal going wide. By ragged play the; South forwards attacked and North were hard put to keep them away from the goal. From a corner hit Whitwell slogged at the ball which hit the cross-bar, but bounced j on the upper side. B. Spiers dribbled the i ball upfield and into the circle, shooting when five yards off the goal. Snook jumped out, stopped the ball, and cleared cleverly. The play at this stage was very fast and going from one end of the field to the other. - First South carried the ball to North's goal-mouth, where Ewan Bayed, and then Spiers followed the ball into Souths circle and shot, hitting the side of the net. From a free hit against North, Whitwell ran through with the ball and hit up to Maystone on the South't> left wins. His shot went wide of the goal. Again Whitwell gathered in the ball and passed to Maystone, whose shot went past the net. . , ' The South forwards went up the field in a line to North's circle, where a shot was stopped by Hughes oh his pads. Fullwood followed in and pushed the ball into the goal. Twenty minutes of the spell had gone. South I,' North 1. From a hit.by a North back Rushbvidgc carried the ball to the circle and from a nicely-placed pass Packer had a-shot which Snook took on his pads and sent around the side of the net. The South backs fed their left wing well, but he was too slow in. centring. Towards the end the North forwards made a good effort to gain the winning margin, but Snook was too good for them. The weather was fine and th« gTound fast. There were about 700 pressat.
