CANTERBURY BEATEN

HOME SIDE .WINS 3—o

JEFFREYS SCORES ALL COALS

la the first "representativa match o£ the, "season" to bo played at Wellington, the local eleven defeated a Canterbury side by the substantial score of 3 goals to nil. The game was played at the Basin Reserve under good conditions. Though- the visitors started well, it was soon, apparent that they would.not be able to stand up to the *wift attacks of the Wellington forwards. JThe Canterbury van, on the other hand, !sras very .weak, and that factor,,combined Vith Wellington's • strong defence, presented the southern -.team from scoring. The-, defence of Canterbury was solid, but in other respects the team v|is not up to the standard of their opponents. PLAY DESCRIBED. The teams "were a~3 follows:— Canterbury.—M." Mitchell; W. Lorimer, 8. Cawtheray; S. Bristow, A. Sutherland, I. M'Leod: J.. Spierß, D. Sutherland, F. Smith, C. Pickup, X. Knight. Wellington.— G. Parkin: J. Quest G. Aberaethy; J. M'Leod. J Campbell, S. Cinnmingsi R. M'Leod, M. Condon, E. Jeffreys, J. Smith, W, Cudby. Eeferee: Mr. E. Watts. Canterbury kicked off, and Wellington attacked .on tho right wing. E. M/Leod failed to finish.the movement, and *. Smith snapped tip an opportunity. Jle lushed downiield, but though closely watched by the Wellington backs/ had a cood opportunity "to score.' His shot was wild and high. Except for one dash into Canterbury's territory by Wellington, the visitors enjoyed the advantage in the early stages -of the game. Knight worked up Sicely, but his shot from the /wing -was weak. Fortune changed when in a burst 'cj£ speed, Smith, the Wellington centreforward, broke away. His shot was well «iken by Mitchell. ".Play-became attracteve/with each side attacking in turn. ■Canterbury were unlucky when a'forward lovement was. stop.ped ■ for. an infriiigelent The next minute saw R. MLeod »ntro dangerously, placing Wellington in r>d position. No one wa» handy .to Tris centre. Knight, the Canterbury i£t wing,, was again dangerous when he peung the ball-aerpii the goal-mouth, piers came in to flniahoff the movement at "his" allot wai wild. Sutherland pleased ie spectators with some pretty touches, nt although he fed the forwards well the Wellington defence was usually up to the mark. K. M'Leod again centred, but Jeffreys, who came up quickly to take the pass/shot wildly. The manoeuvrewas repeated a few minutes later. On this occasion Jeffreys took more time, and he beat Mitchell with a high shot sent in from dose quarters. Wellington J Canterbury ;•••• °

'After a period of uninteresting play the Canterbury centre again got away, iie fwung the leather out to his right /wing, but Spiers kicked too hard, thus losing an opportunity. Cudby raced down the line, did centred dangerously, the ball going out,; however, close to the goal. . Spiere agam broke away, but his attempt at goal, was feeble. Lorimer and Cawtberay, the Canterbury backs, put m'Bome solid work, fceing'called on frequently to break up the Wellington attack. The visitors' half and back lines were, good, but the forwards were weak. For-the greater part of this Bpell Canterbury were called on to defend. One of the few bright movements was supplied by Canterbury, when Spiers crossed. Like a flash, Knight shot, the ball staking the cross-bar, rebounding into play. Wellington then cleared from the awkward position. F. Smith raised the hopes of the Canterbury supporters when he dashed away, only to. come to grief when lie ran up against Guest. Wellington returned'to the attack, and the MLeodJeffreys combination agam worked successfully, Jeffreys beating Mitchell, this time with a rising shot taken from close quarters'. ( Wellington ~ Canterbury v '■'■': THE SECOND SPELL. On-the resumption of play Canterbury attacked, Spiers making a nice run down the wing, but he lacked hmsh, and Wellington cleared. Smith almost scored for Wellington when he shot from close quarters, but the shot was a weak one. As it was, Mitchell just turned it. Wellington •was called on to defend, and a hard shot from D. Sutherland struck the upright. An'opportunity was snapped up by Smith, ttw> Canterbury centre-forward, whose risingrffot at goal narrowly missed the mark. &. MTjeod again worked up the wing, but was unsupported. Spiers received a Aance when the ball came up from the centre, but though supported by Smith, fee was no match for the Wellington backs. Parkin threw clear, and' Guest completed sic movement by sending the ball well upfield. J. Smith worked to the front and ehot, his attempt being quite a good one. In forward play, Wellington pressed, and Jeffreys ran up in a solo effort, scoring frith a well-timed shot. Wellington 3 Canterbury <y The Wellington forwards continued to Sominate the play, and whenever the Canterbury van got away the Wellington, backs invariably stopped the movement. Condon transferred to B. M'Leod, who centred, but Cawtheray was steady,, and deared. The Canterbury .backs continued to play a solid, defensive game. Their forwards were disappointing, and Sutherland, at centre-half, was the pick of the intermediate line. On the other hand, Wellingtonfs van continued to press, and the home defensive left no loop-hole. Towards the end of the game the Canterbury forwards broke away several times, but both .1?. Smith and Spiers, who mainly featured in the attacks, failed when they tried to get through the Wellington defence. Wellington held the upper hand till'the end, the game finishing with the score unaltered.
