THE COMPETITIONS
The annual festival of tho Wellington Competitions Society will open next Saturday morning in the Town Hall and Con-cei-t Chamber, and in the evening, when, the recalls are heard in the Town Hall,! the Mayor (Mr. G-. A. Troup), who is patron of the society, will perform the official opening ceremony. Over 3000 entries have been received from all over the Dominion for this year's festival, and a very high standard of work is expected in all sections. It should be noted that the Competitions Society is not formed for gain. The profits of any festival are used to provide scholarships in vocal and instrumental music, also elocution, each scholarship entitling the winner to free tuition (from any teacher he or she may select) up to the value of ten guineas. The society is hoping for strong public support this year in order to increase the number of scholarships it provides, which at present number six. Two season tickets may be obtained for a guinea. These are transferable and available for every session during the festival fortnight .with the exception of the matinee and demonstration "concerts. ..
