FIRE ON THE TERRACE

APAET.MENT HOUSE DA3VIAGED

A fire in a large apartment house on The lorraee on Saturday evening, just as theatre crowds were wending their way home, provided gome excitement. There seems to have been a delay in giving the alarm, the occupants of the house apparently being unaware that the building was on fire. -

The Central 3?ire Station received the call at 10.15 p.m., but by that time the house was well alight. The building, which is a 13-rbomed house, 126, The Terrace, is near the corner of Woodward street, Mr. George Oudaille being the occupier and the Public Trustee the owner. When the brigade ' arrived there was plenty of smoke to indicate where the fire was. On the ground floor the kitchen, washhouse, and a bedroom, and on the first floor two bedrooms, were practically burnt out. The brigade with two leads of hose confined the fire to these rooms, although water and smoke damaged others.

The seat of the outbreak is presumed to have been in a chimney. This was the last part of the burning building to bo extinguished. Some of the occupants of the house were unaware for some time that the building was on fire, but subsequently made a hasty exit with as many personal belongings as possible. One tenant, Mr. B. M'G. Goidsman, is stated to be a heavy loser, fiis belongings being in the": gutted robins. -'* ' - '"•■'. . • .. : ■' -•
