A FURTHER DEMAND

GAMING HOUSE CHARGES A further remand for one week was granted by Mr. W. H. Woodward, S.M., in the Magistrate's Court to-day in the case of August Hjalmar Peterson, a bootmaker, aged 36, and Thomas Quin, a merchant, aged 35, who are charged with using a shop at 50, Ghuznce. street, as a common gaming-house. Peterson was further charged on two counts of betting at totalisator odds. Mr. J. Scott, who appeared for Peterson, took exception to the fact that the last, two charges against Petorsori had been "hurled at his head at the last minute." He said that until that moment ho knew nothing about the charges of laying totalisator odds, and he considered that . the police should have notified him. He asked for a remand to consider the matter.

Appearing for Quin, Mr. A. B. Sievwright submitted that tho case of his client should go on. He had been to Court three times on the matter, and he contended that if Quin and Peterson were tried jointly on the gam-ing-house charge both men would be prejudiced. He therefore applied for severance.

Detective-Sergeant Holmes objected to this procedure, and the Magistrate said he would adjourn both cases. Ho would decide the question of severance at tho next hearing.
