Dr. "W. E. Inge, dean of St. Paul's, ' ivho attained his three score and ten recently, owes his nickname, "the . Gloomy Dean," rather to those follies ho castigates than to any real pessimism on his part, but it must be admitted > that at one period of his career ho was . regarded as a veritable joy-killer, states the "Sunday Times." His lectures, though invaluable for examination purposes, were perforce so excruciatingly dull as , ro inspire a byword among the students, "Kill-Inge no murder,"
