HIS WIN AT CAULFIELD In a description of the Malakoff Stakes decided at Caulfield on 2nd August the Melbourne "Sporting Globe" states Yhat Waterline, who had been one o£ the leaders from the start, took the lead turning for home, and was first into the straight from Amanthus. Half a furlong from home it looked as though Amanthus j would trouble Waterline, but the latter's rider merely had to shake him up and the New Zealander bounded away to win j Sjy a length and a quarter. The nine furJon.qs attached to the race was traversed in lmin 55% sec. Waterline carried 8.10,1 the same weight allotted to him in both the Caulfield and Melbourne Cups, and Gib less than that in the A.J.C. Metropolitan Handicap. Waterline raced in the interests of Mr. "S. A. fiawdon," who paid 2000 guineas for him. It was from the late Sir George Clifford that Mr. "Knwdon" bought Broadsword, with whom he won the Doncaster Handicap of 1911, and another good stake-earner acquired from the same breeder was Sharpshooter, knch cost 500 guineas, but thoroughbred values were not as high in those days as they are now.
