BLACK AND WHITE

Two recent books on occultism are to hand. One, "Man's Highest PurpW," is by Karel Weinfurter (London: Rider and Co.), and- the other is "Light Bearers of Darkness," by "Inquire Within" (London; Boswell Printing and Publishing Co.). The former calls itself an endeavour to present a practical guido to the esoteric teachings of the Bosicrucian's. In reality it is a treatise on one form of practical mysticism, and can hardly be considered as' an authoritative pronouncement on Bosicrucian teachings. The author has adapted many eastern practices of meditation and concentration to suit western peoples, and believes that by the methods he sets forth and claims to be practicable union can be obtained with the Creator. He is obviously sincere in bis mysticism, and believes that therein lies salvation. The other book is a tirade against Freemasons, Eosierucians, and all occult societies. The authoress holds that the activities of all these are inspired by Powers of Evil, although individuals working in them may bo sincere enough. Their ultimate aim and object is world-revolution. Small value can bo attached to her many wild statements, -especially in view of the fact tliat she does not hesitate to reveal "secrets" which she, as a member of an occult Order, swore very solemn oaths never to reveal. It is hardly a book which anyone with the slightest knowledge of Freemasonry or occult Orders is likely to tako seriously.— H.W.M.
