LONDON, 13th August,
Tho Chapman controversy continues unabated. Chapman himself says he cannot throw any light on the cricket mystery. It is revealed "that the meeting of selectors was one of' the most prolonged in recent years. The team should ordinarily have been announced on Saturday, but the disagreement was so marked that Rhodes was asked to remain iri London for the week-end.
The decision to drop Chapman was not reached until after very long discussion. Mr. White's view concerning the dropping of Chapman is not definitely known, but it is stated that there was a distinct cleavage in the committee, with a Slight majority on the side of tho drastic shange. Mr. Leve-son-Gower favoured Freeman's inclusion, but Bhodes opposed it. A. E. B. Gilligan, in tho "Daily News" says: "Chapman's omission will be remembered in years to come as one of the biggest cricket blunders ever made. It is a national calamity. Even more, it is nothing short of a crime. I have been a great supporter of the Selection Committee. Now their attitude fills me with disgust. Like thousands of sportsmen in Britain, lam at a loss to understand their stupid mistake. The Australians are laughing up their sleeves."
