IN SELF-DEFENCE
KILLING OF ROBERT CURRY
ABORIGINALS ACQUITTED
BRISBANE, 14th August,
Peter Pryor and Thomas .Hoffman, charged with the murder of Robert Curry, superintendent of Palm Island aboriginals, have been, acquitted.
The Crown entered a nolle prosequi,
Mr. Justice Douglas said the community on Palm Island had every right to protect itself when a man such as Curry threatened the lives of those on the island.
Police who went to Palm Island to inquire into the affair ascertained that Curry, after running amuck on Palm Island, and wounding Dr. Patterson and the matron of the hospital, went to Fantome Island and killed his 20-year-old daughter and 10-year-old son, and burned the home. Then, when he returned to Palm Island natives shot him dead while landing. The bodies of the daughter and son were found in the ruins of the home adjoining the island. Curry evidently was greatly worried over complaints of his treatment of natives. ■_
