ONE OF MANY MOTHERS.
HOMES FOR THE PEOPLE
The claims pf Lower Wairarapa as a solution of homes and work are submitted by a correspondent, "Cheaper Rent," who' pictures city workers living on the seventy, miles of flat country between the Lower Lake and Masterton, providing quick access waa given. He mentions people travelling between Melbourne and Port Phillip, 80 miles away, and thinking nothing of it. "Cheaper Rent" states that Wellington people do not seem to realise that the main cause of the prevailing high rents is the high price of land, timber, and labour. Mr, Colemau I'hillipg's idea of a tunnel between Lower Lake and Day's Bay is stated as one means of getting over the hill difficulty, which would also allow i stock to be shipped direct at Poiut Howard. An aero* piano would soon verify the opinion that tho distance in a direct line betweqfl the two points mentioned is only eleven miles; land then would bo nearer to the city than Upper-Hutt.1 A-phase of dear houses, nqooi'dipg^ to the '■ : correspondent, is the "silent" homes, childless!, homes created by deifF -vqiitis, He urges :,that if! there was proper drainage, hundreds of acres of the Lower Lake could bo reclaimed,- and Wellington ■ workers could their three acvejrjnd a cow, or. poultry ranches. He submits that his arguments ;are not in the direction; ot-securing o quicker, train service ■for"'tho prosperous farmer of the Wairarapn, but, n question, of cheaper rents, bigger garden. plots, and healthier chiSlroji.■' '-»'- ■ •'.-'-. ■:■']■.'■'''- y-
