VISITOR TO SYDNEY
.WHALE IN HARBOUR
SPOUTS UNDER NEW BRIDGE
SYDNEY, 12th August.
An unusual, and in somo respects a» unwelcome, visitor in Sydney Harbour to-day was a forty-feet humpback whale, which careered from one side t» the other, and even disported itself under the new bridge, where it spouted water, to the great ' delight of the bridge-builders.
Half a dozen speed launches followed it, and attempts were made by fishermen to harpoon it,' and also to shoot it, without avail. One launch got bo close to the monster that the boat was damaged and the occupants thrown off their feet.
Zoological officials on the harbour front were greatly interested in the pursuit, and had visions of financial interests in its capture, alive or dead. Eventually, after two hours ' excitement, the whale disappeared. Ferrj; travellers then lost their nervousness.
