PETONE-HUTT GAS BOARD
The monthly meeting of the Petone and Lowe/ Hutt Gas Lighting Board was held last night;l Mr. W. G. Lodder presiding. The Petone Borough Couiicil wrote conveyingl its decision to grant the board a lease of a portion of the lane by the gasworts at £7 10s per annum for a period of twelve years, with the right to purchase at valuation. It was decided to ask the council to put a price on the land, so that the board might purchase it at any time. In reply to a suggestion that the Kailway Department should 'purchase', some land1 from tho board for siding purposes, the General Managerrof Railways stated in a letter that this ■ could not be done. He suggested that ,the'board should offer the land to an adjoining owner. A letter froiiwthe Kbrokoro Progressive League'gave the result of a canvass of the district a- view to finding consumers. 'IVfnryTfo.ur'had given a definite assurance that, they-would take gns, and nine were, hesitating. The board decided to aspertain definitely the cost of reticulating the district, and to inform the Korokoro people of its decision later.
The report of the gas manager (Mr. H. Appleyard) for the month of July stated that from 726 tons of coal carbonised 10,628,000 cubic feet of gas had been manu-' factured, giving an average make per ton of 14.C38 cubic feet. The increased manu-. faeture over July, 1929, was 442 000 cubic feet, and the average calorific value of the gas was '470 B.Th.U. During the month, owing to the use of Newcastle coal, a full supply of gas was maintained without the use of the' carbtiretting plant. Coal, tar, and coke in stock on Ist August were estimated to be 987 tons, 5600 gallons, and 75 tons respectively. During the month 42 new services, 46 cookers, 6 coppers, 3 caliphonts, and 7 gas fires were installed. Approximately 41 chains of mains were laid.
